Description

Red Daylily adapts to most soils.

Such a lovely flower easily grows in almost any soil condition. Common growing areas for Red Daylily are Zones three through nine.

They bloom mid to late summer in any location of your yard or garden. They tolerate any amount of moisture and grow in full sun or partial shade. Their growth is considered medium.

 What They Look Like

Commonly known as "Red Daylily," it is a red-orange color. It has a bright yellow center. Petals are slightly rounded at the end and lay almost flat when fully open. Its Greek name means beautiful and day.

Stunning large red blooms against the deep green foliage stand out in your garden. Standing 18" to 23" tall, they make an excellent backdrop for shorter plants or ground covers. Spreading from 18" to 23", they are the highlight of your borders. These Red Daylilies make lovely cut flowers.

Red Daylilies are easily grown in containers. They make an excellent addition to your patio, deck, or balcony; Daylilies will draw Butterflies, Hummingbirds, and Bees to your garden.

Red Daylilies are Hardy and Resistant

Daylilies survive harsh conditions, unlike other plants. They tolerate polluted city environments, slopes, poor or dry soils; Daylilies can even survive under Black Walnut trees. These attributes make them very popular for borders along busy sidewalks. And hillsides with poor or rocky soil and other areas with low water supply. Red Daylilies are Drought Tolerant.

Rabbits do not like daylilies. Should you live in an area with those little nibblers around, you will be safe planting daylilies. It is unusual for these plants to be affected by disease or insects.

The optimum planting time in Northern climes is springtime. Although being hardy, daylilies can be planted almost any time. Optimum planting times for Southern climes are spring or fall.

Being a perennial, each plant lives more than two years. Daylilies can be easily replanted by dividing up the clumps of plants. Transplanting is best done in late fall after the plant has stopped blooming.

Daylilies are native to eastern Asia, including China, Korea, and Japan. Daylilies are not a lily.
